Documenting my quarantine experience through Junk Journaling

This video/post is a little different than my usual videos.

YouTube Video Share

I wanted to share a junk journal I created during my quarantine.

Here I will talk a bit about the creative work and progress, in addition to my thoughts and feelings as I created.

Making the Journal:

I used mostly collaging (my little scrap papers) throughout the journal. It started as a blank graph notebook. I had to remove many of the pages since it comes with 100 sheets and I certainly did not need that many! I will use the sheets I removed for other projects.

It had very flimsy pages so I opted with collaging to add heft and structure to the pages. The initial pages are somewhat scattered and disorganized (more details below) but I used bits and pieces of scraps and incoming happymail and cards from swaps. Other elements I used were drawings and doodles from my kids.

For adhesive I used plane ‘ol Elmers liquid and stick glue. I was not necessarily thinking “longevity” when making this. It was more so a therapeutic practice at the end of each day. I also did not document in chronological order. I spent some evenings just making backgrounds and others going back and adding pictures and elements and journaling.

The various cutouts and printouts were obtained via a link I got from the IG of @TraciMReed and it included a bunch of free files created and shared by very talented and generous crafters/artists. Below is the link for the files. Please visit link for full list of creators.

Thought Process:

Times are different right now for us all. Things feel surreal, almost like someone else’s story and we are just trying to get through the pages as quickly as we can. At least this is what it has felt like for me. I have been with my boys and I have been thinking a lot about how often I probably take them for granted. Like, they are here, and I get to see them grow up, except that isn’t really true, because tomorrow is never promised. I am immensely lucky and privileged to have them in my life and have spent more time thinking of the “future” than of the right now, than I’d like to admit.

This time of uncertainty, of trying not to panic and keep my family safe, has been very reflective of living in the “Now” and that is what I have tried to document in this journal.

The first few pages in the journal seem messy, jumbled and disorganized. This is exactly how I felt when starting this project. I found myself going back to add, adjust, redo and finally I realized this was just me trying to “change” how I was feeling so I stopped going back and began to move forward.

As you go though the book, each page becomes more organized, with better color schemes and improved layouts. Again, this is reflective of my emotions and thought process.

By the end of the journal, it seems to “fizzle” but it was more that I had satisfied my need to express my emotions and feelings in this journal and I was ready to move on and let go.

I am quite happy with how it turned out and I plan to begin a new one based on this continued experience.

I hope that sharing this project and my thought process can remind other creatives (and anyone really) that sometimes in uncertainty and fear we can find opportunities to reflect on how we feel, why we feel this way, acknowledge where we are emotionally and seek some resolve, some peace and calm.

I wish you all health and comfort throughout these rough times and beyond.

Coffee and a Layout

Hello crafty friends,

Today’s post is a bit delayed but I am sharing a layout with you. One of my 2020 crafty goals is to make and share more scrapbooking layouts.

Here I use a giant doily, purchased at the dollar store to accent the photo. I used a few clusters to help the eye move around the page and I used my favorite colors, salmon pink and teal as my main colors. Some of my clusters are made using ephemera from the Whimsical collection by Paige Evans,Pink Paisley brand. I also used ephemera by Vicki Boutin and papers from older paper pads.

Below are some more photos.

There is also a process video available on my YT channel found here.

Easy Mini Flip Album

Hello all!

Hope you are having a blessed and happy New Year.

Here I share ideas for making a quick and SUPER easy mini flip album.

I basically took large scraps, 12×12″ sheets and 6×6″ papers and trimmed them down to 3 1/2′ x 5″. To keep the pages together, I punched a hole at the top left corner of each page.

Once the pages are trimmed and holes punched, the album comes together very easily with photos and embellishments.

For one of the albums I also added a ribbon and dangle charm to my plastic ring used to hold my pages together.

Below are photos of the process and completed albums.

Scrapbook Process #5 – Relaxin’

Hello crafty friends,

I have been a bit MIA now that I am back at work and off my maternity leave… But I wanted to get this layout to share with you all. It is a photo my husband took of me while we were on our first vacation together and still dating (like 11 or 12 years ago!). I have been caring for my baby (it has been amazing <3) throughout the summer and was missing a little beach and summertime fun so I decided to scrap this pic and reminisce this great paradise vacation.

The process for this layout can be found on my YouTube channel.

All of the pattern paper I use is from an Amy Tangerine 12 x 12 Happy Together paper pad. The solid aqua cardstock that I use as my framing sheet was in my stash and I am unsure of the brand. It was also 12 x 12. I trimmed my background paper down 1/2 inch on each side so I am left with an 11 x 11 white with yellow polka dot background. As seen in the above picture, I mat my photo with a yellow pattern card cut out from a card sheet in the 12 x 12 pad (is that what you call that??)

After matting the photo I play with the borders to get the look I want. I settled on the drinks border and laid it over a 1 1/2″ strip of pattern sunset paper. above and below the sunset strip I adhered a coordinating thin strip of patterned squares, also from the same strip pack. It was initially a thicker strip with multiple rows of squares but I cut it down to have thin strips.

I also added more matting to the sides of my photo. On the left and right is another card that I cut in half and at the bottom is a piece I cut out of a full 12 x 12 pattern sheet from the pad. As a title I cut the word RELAXIN’ from another beach border and place it at the bottom of my picture over a fishtail cut strip. The beach borders are all stickers and already have adhesive at the back making placement super easy.

To complete my layout I add three clusters. Two are elements I have cut from a few beach borders and the third were words also from a border sticker. To add a little something to the words cluster I top them with a wave from one of the border strips.

I kept the layout simple and clean by just using pattern papers all from one pad and all other elements came from the one pack of border strips.

I truly enjoyed creating this layout and it made me want to plan a Caribbean vacation ASAP! =) I will however be doing more in the way of finding ways to continue to reconstruction efforts of many of the islands hurt by last year’s hurricane Maria. (more info coming soon) Should you have any questions, about this layout please include that in the comments section and I hope to see you all again soon!!

Until next time! XoXo
